Abstract

The present invention is a process and sulfuric acid plant design for the reduction of start-up SO 2 , SO 3 and H 2 SO 4 emissions in sulfuric acid production, wherein SO 2 is converted to SO 3 in n successive catalyst beds, where n is an integer > 1 am. The last catalyst layer is used as an absorber for SO 2 to SO 3 during the start-up process, and during the preceding run-down one or more of the m layers downstream of the first layer are individually or simultaneously purged with hot gases, where m is an integer >1; m < n. Additionally, one separate purge with hot gas is used for the last layer.
