Abstract

Using well-phenotyped population-based studies offers unique opportunities to improve our understanding of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In population-based studies, it is possible to study the ECM in early asymptomatic stages of disease development and across different diseases, which provides a more comprehensive picture of the role of different ECM proteins. However, ECM markers have historically been underprioritized in population-based studies, and it is only in recent years that studies have included larger numbers of ECM markers.
