Abstract
A passive damper (1) for damping relative lateral movement between a tensioned cable (4) or other elongate member and a support structure (6). The passive damper (1) comprises: a first fixed element (20) rigidly connected to a cable (11) or other elongated member, a second fixed element (30) rigidly connected to the support structure (5), and at least one rotation damping device (40) arranged between the first fixed element (20) and the second fixed element (30). The rotational damping device (40) is configured to convert the relative lateral motion into a relative rotational motion between at least two arms (50, 60) of the rotational damping device (40), the at least two arms being connected at a rotational joint (70) with a damping pad (72) sandwiched between the at least two arms (50, 60). The rotary joint (70) has a rotation axis (Y) substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis (X) of the cable (6).
