DEMETILATION OF METHIONINE METHYL ESTER AND ITS HYDROXY ANALOGUE

Abstract
A process of demethylation of a methionine methyl ester or its hydroxy analog and the production of methanethiol as a by-product; These products can be used as a feed additive for animals or as a feed additive. Methanethiol can be consumed in a hydrothiolation step, such as in a step of preparing methionine methyl ester or its hydroxy analog of methyl vinyl glycolate. Claim 1: A process to generate a demethylation product of formula (2): where R is -OH or -NH₂, characterized in that it comprises a demethylation step to react a methyl ester of formula (1): CH₃- OCO-CHR-CH₂-CH₂-S-CH₃ (1), where R has the same meaning as before, with a hydrogen sulfide anion to obtain methanethiol and the demethylation product of formula (2). Claim 4: A process for generating a demethylation product of the formula (2): wherein R is -OH or -NH₂, characterized in that it comprises: a1) a hydrothiolation step to react a compound of the formula (3): CH₃-OCO-CHR-CH = CH₂ (3), where R has the same meaning as before, with methanethiol to obtain a methyl ester of the formula (1): CH₃-OCO-CHR-CH₂-CH₂-S-CH₃ (1), where R has the same meaning as before, and b) a demethylation step to react the methyl ester of the formula (1) with a hydrogen sulfide anion to obtain methanethiol and the demethylation product of the formula (two).
