Method for evaluating the proper installation of a metering pump (2) comprising the following steps: a) setting a drive pattern to a first pattern configuration (PC_n), b) operating the metering pump (2) with said drive pattern, c) detecting a stroke-diagram (34) during operation of the metering pump (2) with said drive pattern, the stroke diagram representing a relation between a force and the stroke position, d) deriving at least one first criterion from at least one portion (38, 40) of the detected stroke-diagram(34), e) selecting an evaluation step (E_n+1) by use of a decision matrix (36) on basis of the derived criterion, f) setting the drive pattern to a second or further pattern configuration (PC_n+1) according to the selected evaluation step (E_{n +i}) and repeating steps b) to f) until at least one predefined final evaluation step (F) in the decision matrix (36) is reached. Furthermore, the invention refers to a metering pump device configured to carry out this method.
